Install WoW addons manually

The toc file must sit directly inside Interface/AddOns/YourAddon. A second nested folder hides the addon.

Steps

Close the client. Open the flavor folder from the path table. If Interface does not exist, launch the game once and log a character out. Blizzard creates Interface on first run.

Unzip. You want AddOns/ElvUI/ElvUI.toc, not AddOns/ElvUI/ElvUI/ElvUI.toc. ElvUI's own note says not to paste over an old copy. Delete the old folder first. That advice is for ElvUI specifically. It is still the safe pattern for everyone else.

Start the game. On the character screen open AddOns and enable the row. The "load out of date" box resets after a patch. Wowhead's install guide is the source for that reset. Checking it once does not stick forever.

Questions

Can I install over the old folder?

ElvUI says not to. Delete the old folder, then unzip. Other addons are less strict, and the delete still avoids a half-updated file.
